Before you book — the honest part
- Poás requires a pre-purchased, timed entrance ticket from the national park system (SINAC) — you can't just show up and buy one at the gate. We flag this early and help you get the timing right; it's the #1 thing that ruins DIY visits.
- The crater is at 2,700 m: it's cold up there and clouds roll in by late morning. Bring a layer, go early.
- The crater lookout can close on short notice for volcanic activity or weather. If it does, the coffee highlands, waterfall gardens and viewpoints still make a great day — we'll re-plan on the spot.

Do I need to buy Poás tickets in advance?
Yes — Poás uses a timed-entry ticket system through SINAC (the national park service) and tickets regularly sell out. This surprises a lot of visitors at the gate. When you book with us we tell you exactly what to buy and for what time slot so the day actually works.
Will we see the crater?
Best odds are early morning; by late morning clouds often cover it, and the park occasionally restricts access for volcanic activity. No honest operator guarantees the view. If it's closed or clouded over, the rest of the day is still excellent.
How long is this day?
Flexible: about 6 hours if it's just the volcano and a lunch stop, up to 9 with a coffee tour or La Paz Waterfall Gardens added. It's the least-driving volcano day you can do from San José — about 1.5 hours each way.
Is this good for a first or last day in Costa Rica?
It's the classic first/last-day trip: close to the city and the airport, easy to size to your energy, and a real volcano plus coffee country without a 12-hour commitment.
Is this a guided tour?
