What the drive is like
The route runs north on Route 1 past San Ramón, crosses the Tempisque area into Guanacaste and turns toward the coast through Santa Cruz before dropping into Tamarindo. It is paved the whole way.
It is one of the longer transfers from SJO, which is exactly why travelers book it private: a bathroom or coffee stop whenever you want, car seats fitted before departure, and no detours to drop other passengers in Flamingo or Conchal first.

How long does the drive from SJO to Tamarindo really take?
About 4 to 4.5 hours door-to-door in normal conditions. It's around 230 km, mostly highway, with the last stretch on smaller Guanacaste roads. We plan pickup with real margins, not best-case numbers.
Isn't Liberia (LIR) the better airport for Tamarindo?
If you can land at LIR, it is much closer — about 1 to 1.5 hours away. But plenty of itineraries arrive at SJO because of flight prices, schedules or other stops in the trip. If that's your case, a private transfer is the most comfortable way to cover the distance, and we'll say so honestly if we think another plan suits you better.
What happens if my flight is delayed?
