Why do this day private

  • Private vehicle and driver for the whole day — leave when you want, stay as long as you want
  • Pick your combination: La Fortuna Waterfall, hot springs, hanging bridges, volcano viewpoints
  • Flexible photo, coffee and food stops on a scenic route through San Ramón
  • Honest planning: this is a long day — about 12 hours door to door — and we say so up front

How the day usually goes

A realistic sketch, not a fixed schedule — the whole point of a private day is bending it to your group.

  1. 1

    6:30–7:00 am

Pickup at your San José area hotel — early start beats the traffic and the clouds over the volcano.

  2. 2

    Morning

Scenic drive north (about 3 hours) with a coffee or breakfast stop on the way if you like.

  3. 3

    Midday

Your pick in the Arenal area: La Fortuna Waterfall, hanging bridges, or lunch in town with volcano views.

  4. 4

    Afternoon

Hot springs soak or more exploring — your driver adjusts the day around what you enjoy.

  5. 5

    Evening

Drive back to San José; drop-off at your hotel around 7–8 pm.

What's included — and what isn't

Included

  • Private vehicle and driver for the full day
  • Fuel, tolls and parking
  • Door-to-door pickup and drop-off at San José area hotels
  • Flexible stops along the way — photos, coffee, food, viewpoints
  • Help planning the day: what's worth combining, honest timing

Not included

  • Entrance fees (waterfall, hot springs, bridges — you pay each venue directly)
  • Meals and drinks
  • A naturalist guide — your driver is a driver; the attractions offer their own guided options on site

Before you book — the honest part

  • It's a long day: about 12 hours door to door, with roughly 3 hours of driving each way. Worth it — but we won't pretend it's a quick hop.
  • Cloud cover over the volcano is common, especially in the afternoon. An early start gives you the best odds of a clear view — no operator can guarantee one.
  • If you have 2+ free nights, consider our SJO → La Fortuna transfer and stay up there instead — we'll tell you honestly which fits your itinerary better.

Arenal Volcano & La Fortuna FAQs

Is a day trip to Arenal from San José worth it?

If it's your only chance to see the volcano area, yes — with an early start and a private vehicle it's a great (long) day. If your itinerary allows a night or two in La Fortuna, staying there is the better experience and we'll say so. Ask us and we'll tell you honestly which fits your trip.

How much driving is it?

About 3 hours each way between San José and La Fortuna, door to door. That's the honest number — beware of shorter claims. The route is scenic and paved the whole way, with good stops.

Are entrance fees included?

No. You pay each venue directly (waterfall, hot springs, hanging bridges), which keeps the day flexible — you only pay for what you actually choose to do. We'll tell you current typical entrance costs when we send your quote.

Can we decide the itinerary on the day?

Mostly yes — that's the point of a private day. The one thing worth fixing in advance is the early start. Everything else (waterfall vs. bridges, where to eat, how long to soak) can flex on the day.

Will we see the volcano?

Arenal makes its own weather and afternoon clouds are common. An early arrival gives you the best chance of a clear cone. Anyone who guarantees a view is selling you something.

Is this a guided tour?

No — it's a private driver day. Your driver knows the route and the area and helps you plan, but is not a certified naturalist guide. The waterfall, bridges and hot springs all offer guided options on site if you want deeper nature interpretation.
