Why book this transfer private

  • About 4 to 4.5 hours door-to-door across the Braulio Carrillo mountains and along the Caribbean coast
  • One vehicle the whole way — no bus terminal in San José, no shuttle connections in Limón
  • Drop-off anywhere along the beach road: Playa Negra, Cocles, Punta Uva, Manzanillo
  • We monitor your flight and adjust pickup if it's delayed

What the drive is like

The route climbs out of the Central Valley on Route 32 through Braulio Carrillo National Park — a dramatic rainforest mountain pass — then runs flat past banana country to Limón and south along the coast to Puerto Viejo.

Honest note about Route 32: the mountain section occasionally closes for heavy rain or landslides, and fog can slow it down. It's the road everyone takes — bus, shuttle or private — but with a private transfer we check conditions before departure and plan margins accordingly.

The last stretch from Limón south hugs the Caribbean, and once you pass Cahuita the vibe changes completely — this is the reggae side of Costa Rica. Total door-to-door time is about 4 to 4.5 hours in normal conditions.

Puerto Viejo de Talamanca transfer FAQs

How long does SJO to Puerto Viejo really take?

About 4 to 4.5 hours door-to-door in normal conditions. It's around 215 km: mountain highway to the Caribbean lowlands, then flat coastal road. Allow more if Route 32 has weather delays — we check conditions before departure.

I've heard Route 32 closes sometimes. What happens then?

The mountain section through Braulio Carrillo does close occasionally for heavy rain or landslides. We check the road status before your pickup; if there's a closure we talk to you honestly about timing or the longer alternative routing instead of leaving you guessing at a roadblock.

Can you drop us in Cocles, Punta Uva or Manzanillo instead of Puerto Viejo center?

Yes — the transfer is door-to-door anywhere along the coast road from Cahuita to Manzanillo. Put your exact accommodation in the quote form.

What happens if my flight is delayed?

We track your flight number and adjust the pickup time. Your driver waits for you.

Do you take surfboards?

Yes — Salsa Brava and Cocles are surf classics. Tell us how many boards and their length in the quote form and we assign a vehicle with the right space.

Can we stop along the way?

Yes — a bathroom/coffee stop after the mountain pass is standard, and a stop in Cahuita or at a roadside soda for lunch is easy to add. Mention it in your quote so we plan the timing.
