San José Airport (SJO) to Santa Teresa Private Transfer
Getting to Santa Teresa is the trickiest transfer in Costa Rica: a ferry crossing or a long drive around the gulf, then a rough final stretch. A private transfer handles the logistics — ferry timing included — so you just ride.

Why book this transfer private
- About 5 to 6 hours door-to-door, honestly — by ferry or by road
- Two ways in: the Puntarenas–Paquera ferry (a scenic 70-minute crossing) or all-road around the Gulf of Nicoya — we plan the one that fits your arrival time
- The last stretch into Santa Teresa is partly unpaved — normal for the area, and why a driver beats a rental here
- We monitor your flight and adjust the plan if it's delayed
What the drive is like
There are two honest ways to Santa Teresa. Option one: drive to Puntarenas (about 1.5 hours), cross the Gulf of Nicoya on the car ferry to Paquera (about 70 minutes on the water — a genuinely nice break), then continue about 1.5 hours through Cóbano. With boarding time, plan on 5 to 6 hours total.
Option two: skip the ferry and drive around the gulf over the Tempisque bridge and down the peninsula. It avoids ferry schedules but it's a long drive — usually 5 hours or more — and the final approach is the same for both: the road in and around Santa Teresa is partly gravel, dusty in dry season and muddy after rain.
Which is better depends on when you land: the ferry is pleasant but runs on a fixed schedule, so a late arrival often makes the road option the realistic one. Send your flight details in the quote and we recommend the route honestly — including when we think you should overnight near the airport instead of pushing through.

Santa Teresa / Mal País transfer FAQs
How long does SJO to Santa Teresa really take?
Plan on 5 to 6 hours door-to-door, whichever way you go. Via the Puntarenas–Paquera ferry it's about 1.5 hours to the port, a 70-minute crossing plus boarding time, then about 1.5 hours of driving. Going all the way by road around the gulf is usually 5+ hours of driving. Anyone quoting much less isn't counting the whole trip.
Ferry or road — which one will we take?
It depends on your arrival time. The ferry is the more scenic, relaxed option but runs on a fixed schedule; if your flight lands late we route by road instead, or tell you honestly if an airport-area overnight makes more sense. We confirm the plan in writing with your quote.
My flight lands in the afternoon. Can I still get to Santa Teresa the same day?
Often yes, by road, but arrival will be after dark and the last stretch is slow. For late-evening landings we'll tell you straight: many travelers prefer to sleep near the airport and do the trip fresh in the morning. We'll lay out both options with your quote instead of overpromising.
How bad is the road into Santa Teresa?
The final stretch around Cóbano, Mal País and Santa Teresa is partly unpaved — dusty in dry season, muddy and potholed after rain. It's driven daily and fine with an experienced driver, but it's the part of the trip most people are glad not to be doing in a rental.
What happens if my flight is delayed?
We track your flight number and adjust the plan — including switching between ferry and road routing if the delay changes what's realistic. Your driver waits for you.
Can you provide car seats for children?
Yes — tell us each child's age and weight in the quote form and we confirm the exact seat in writing before your trip.
